Each guide explains how a product works, what it can cost, the risks to weigh, and the questions to ask a lender. They are general information for homeowners in the United States. They are not financial, legal, or tax advice.

How we write them

  • Plain language. We use everyday words and define the terms a lender will use.
  • No lender rankings. Our guides don't feature, rank, or recommend any lender.
  • Dated pages. Every guide shows when it was last updated, and we correct errors when readers tell us about them.
